from 'shag' to 'samurai': shawn hlookoff

Posted August 21, 2008

Quick: Name a Canadian samurai. If you said "Shawn Hlookoff," give yourself a pat on the back, or at least a bottle of maple syrup. It's true: Shawn deserves at least honorary samurai status for contributing the song "Wonderful Surprise" to the amazing upcoming soundtrack album for "Samurai Girl."

His last name may look fictional, but Shawn is a very real force in the music business, and a very busy man these days. His work's already been featured on "Eli Stone," "Kyle XY," and "Greek" -- so that's why that raspy, heartbreaking voice sounds so familiar! Artists from Feist to REO Speedwagon have tapped Shawn to open their shows. And when he isn't busy onstage or in the studio, he's hard at work with "Feed the Need," the charity he created to help stock food banks in his native British Columbia. He's a rising star with a heart.

Big-hearted, hazel-eyed, and talented -- sound too perfect? Does he have dark secrets? Well, maybe if you count performing in a disco cover band: Shawn's first band boasted the name "Shag," and they cranked out covers of '70s dance hits. You gotta start somewhere -- and if "Shag" led somehow to "Wonderful Surprise," then we think you'll agree it's hard to have any regrets. BTW, if you're looking for "Wonderful Surprise," there's only one place to find it-- it's only on the "Samurai Girl" soundtrack.

Which disco hits would your band cover?
