A sleepless night finds Kris and Matt alone on the porch where neither one of them can deny the chemistry between them but both are afraid to act on it. Instead, Matt says he's moving in with Gillian and Kris tells him that he and Gillian are good for each other, but deep down they both wonder if that's really true. Matt goes to bed and Kris is on her own until suddenly Flame appears. The next morning Kris returns Flame to Davis Ranch and Ken tells her that he is selling the foal because he has a crooked leg. Kris is distraught and asks Matt for his help to find a way to help Flame. Together they find a remedy online and convince Ken to give them two weeks to cure Flame.
Working closely together to help Flame only complicates Matt and Kris's relationship. First, it cuts into Matt's ever-growing list of duties on the ranch, causing Jean to lose patience with him. Second, Gillian grows impatient with Matt's seeming disinterest in finding a place for them to live. And then there's Junior who is becoming all the more suspicious of Kris and Matt's feelings for each other. When he finally confronts Matt about his feelings, Matt tells him that he's moving in with Gillian, and when Matt asks Junior how he feels about Kris, Junior tells him that he'll be gone for six months with the rodeo. Whatever tensions that might exist between Junior and Matt, Junior promises to help Matt and Kris get Flame in shape. After a week the remedy doesn't seem to be working and Kris fears that Flame will be sold. Then, Junior shows up with a magnetic brace that he picked up at the University. Touched by his actions and ecstatic when the brace proves to be working, Kris impetuously kisses Junior. Matt witnesses the kiss and thinks that Junior and Kris have rekindled their love, but he leaves before he hears them say their farewells.
With his ranch duties weighing on him, Matt stays behind while Kris and Junior report Flame's miraculous recovery to Ken. The Davis patriarch tells them that he's going to sell Flame anyway unless Junior quits the rodeo and stays behind to help run the ranch. Junior agrees but Kris won't let him make the sacrifice. She tells Junior to go after his dream "full speed." Besides, she says, if Ken sells Flame at least the foal will be with people who care about him.
Meanwhile, Uncle Jesse has returned home and Matt tells him that he doesn't know if he should move in with Gillian. Uncle Jesse tells him that he must first know his own heart before he can open it up to the right person.
Affairs of the heart are running wild at Davis Ranch, too. After spending more and more time with R.J., Dani is heartbroken when he breaks up with her before leaving on the rodeo circuit. It seems that the princess and the cowboy have too many differences, but is this really the end for them?
Back at Raintree, Matt has good news for Kris. Gillian has bought Flame and will be boarding him at Raintree. Overcome with emotion, Kris kisses Matt which they both try to shrug off. But will it be that easy to forget? Later that day, Matt and Gillian deliver some news… they will be living in Jesse's bunkhouse on the ranch while he's away on assignment. On the one hand, Kris is happy that Matt will be close by, but will he be too close for comfort?
That same night, the Davis family gathers at the dinner table and tensions run high. Both Junior and Dani walk away from their father when he demands their support. Junior starts packing for the rodeo and Dani decides to go after R.J. to try to win him back. Ken chases after them and while calling out for them he suffers a heart attack. An ambulance arrives and Junior and Dani follow their father to the hospital.
Once again, everyone's destiny seems uncertain and what the future holds remains to be seen.
