Matt and Kris continue to fumble with their feelings for each other and the situation is further complicated when Gillian finds them in a compromising position on Matt's bed. Add to that, Junior's suspicions, Tina Sharp's return and Matt's new role as half-owner of the ranch and it's just the beginning of the upsets rattling Raintree.
When Gillian finds Kris and Matt together in a not-so-innocent tangle, it prompts Matt to ask Gillian to move in together. As Raintree's newest partner, Matt has a lot of other decisions to make as well, but his first few aren't as well received. First, with the Laborda Stakes coming up, Matt gives Avatar, Wildfire's greatest rival, the stall next to Wildfire's. Pablo and Kris object because they think being so close to Avatar will break Wildfire's spirit before the race, but Matt insists on giving Mr. Sullivan, their biggest client, the best service possible. Then, when Wildfire's times prove not to be so promising, Matt scratches him from the race, further infuriating Kris and making her wonder what exactly her relationship with Matt has become.
With tensions already high at Raintree, things go from tense to stressed when Tina Sharp shows up as Avatar's jockey. She's the same old Tina, so when she asks Kris to spy on Ishmael's trial runs at Davis Farms, it's just par for the course. They're caught by Dani and chastised by Matt, but it's not until Tina demands that Kris do some menial work for her that Kris loses her cool. When Kris refuses to do the job, the temperamental jockey quits, sending Mr. Sullivan to the Ritters with an ultimatum… get Tina back or lose him as a client. Kris apologizes and Tina agrees to ride Avatar on one condition: Kris owes her… big time.
Meanwhile, Junior tries to get close to Kris but it seems like all she can talk about is her troubles with Matt. He's becoming evermore suspicious of Matt and Kris' feelings for each other and all the more disheartened at his prospects of rekindling a romance with her, so he decides to go to Abilene for the rodeo.
At Davis Farms, Dani tries to deny her feelings for RJ but accepts a date with him on the condition that there are "no strings attached." With Dani glued to her cell phone all night, the date turns out to be a total bust and RJ confronts her about her fear of letting down her guard. Shaken by the truth, Dani asks for another chance and is pleasantly surprised when RJ cancels his trip to the Abilene rodeo to be with her.
In the end, even Kris and Pablo acknowledge that Matt's first decisions as part-owner of Raintree were the right ones. Avatar wins the Laborda Stakes and Wildfire is saved the trauma of losing. Matt promises Kris that they'll get Wildfire in racing shape again, but just what shape is Matt and Kris' relationship in? Matt is set to move in with Gillian, but deep down he has his doubts. At the end of the day, Matt puts on a brave face, Kris finds a quiet spot to be alone with Wildfire, and Junior sits in front of Raintree's gates before turning away. Caught in a triangle, someone's bound to get hurt, but just who will it be?
