Kris and Matt continue to mull over the Sheik's offer of an illegal rematch between Wildfire and Avatar. If they win, it could mean the end of Raintree's financial troubles, but if they're caught it could mean the end of Raintree itself. While they consider their options, other troubles surface as Matt and Jean butt heads when he buys a horse without telling her and she sells one without telling him.
At Davis Farms, Dani is done mulling over the race. She's all in but she shuts Junior out when he asks her what she's up to. Then, suddenly, the deal changes. The Sheik informs them that the race won't be on track. It will be a 10-mile open race through the countryside with no rules and a prize that's been doubled to two million dollars. Matt wants to pull out of the race. It's too risky, he says. Wildfire could break a leg and Kris could break her neck on the rough terrain. But Kris still wants to do it. In her mind it's the only thing that can save Raintree.
Kris doesn't convince him, but news about Raintree's latest predicament leads him to think that maybe they should go through with the race, after all. The bank is calling in Raintree's loan and if they default on it they'll lose the ranch. To save Raintree, Jean considers selling off horses while Matt thinks about selling off a piece of the land. Again, mother and son butt heads and it makes Kris all the more certain that the race is their only way out.
In a surprising turn of events, Dani gets cold feet and pulls out of the race. Junior, however, has found out about it and hatches his own plan. Namely, to go through with the race and have Gillian, who is a champion jumper, ride Avatar.
On the morning of the race, Kris sneaks off on Wildfire and meets the Sheik, Junior and Gillian at the starting line. Matt wakes up to find Kris gone and goes after her. At Davis Farms, Dani is furious at Junior because her Dad and Pablo are wondering where Avatar is. She scrambles to stop the race, but she's too late. The race begins and Kris and Gillian are neck and neck. Matt arrives on the scene to watch Kris risk life and limb for Raintree as she and Gillian approach a river near the finish line. Gillian takes the safe way around, but Kris and Wildfire make the dangerous jump across the river and land safely on the other side to win the race. Raintree is two million dollars richer, but Matt isn't happy at all. Jean is even less thrilled when Kris gives her the money. In fact, she won't accept it. Pablo is furious, too, and accuses Kris of stealing Wildfire and reverting back to the inmate she once was. In retaliation, he takes Wildfire to Davis Farms where he says he'll be safer.
Then things go from bad to worse. Having been tipped off by the sheriff that Dani called to stop the race, officers from the Racing Commission show up at Raintree. The officers inform Jean that she and the ranch are charged with illegal racing and that, if proven guilty, Raintree will lose its license. Kris stands up and says that it was all her idea and that the Ritters didn't know about the race. She hands over the money and pleads guilty, which means one thing. Her racing days are over.
A similar scene plays out at Davis Ranch, where Dani takes the fall and loses her license and has to relinquish her half of the ranch to Junior. She's beside herself and a rift appears between her and Junior that might never be fixed.
Kris tries to explain why she did what she did to Jean, and gets a shocking response. Jean asks her to leave Raintree. Kris is stunned and Matt objects, but Jean's word is final. Could this really be the end?
Kris says a tearful goodbye to Wildfire and hits the road. Back at Raintree, Jean sits alone in an empty stable. When Matt asks her what's wrong, she explains that she's sold all the horses to save the ranch. Matt is speechless until he exclaims that he's going to get the horses back and the ranch running again. Most of all, he's going to get Kris back.
As night falls, Kris is on the road trying to hitch a ride. A car stops. She approaches it and says to the unseen driver... "What are you doing here?" Who can be in the car? And will he or she drive Kris away from Raintree for good.
