Everyone at Raintree is gearing up for the Bristol Stakes, knowing that if Wildfire wins the race, he'll earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby. The situation is much the same at Davis Farms. Avatar is also in the running for a berth in the Derby, but in typical Davis style, Ken tries to get whatever advantage he can. He asks Pablo if there is any information about Wildfire that they can use to their advantage, but Pablo refuses to give anything away. Ken and Dani are disappointed in him, but Dani promises to figure out a way to give Avatar an advantage. Just what does she have planned?
It soon becomes apparent when Gillian shows up at Davis Farms, looking like a new woman. Her horse, Reliant, is in the Bristol Stakes, too, and Dani has offered to board the horse and let Gillian stay at the house. It's Dani's suspicion that with Gillian around it will throw Kris off, and, as Ken says, "a distracted jockey is a losing jockey."
Kris is definitely distracted, but not by Gillian. She's preoccupied with trying to mend Junior and Matt's friendship. She appeals to Dani for help but Dani shoots back that the only way to get Matt and Junior to be friends again is for Kris to leave. Undeterred, Kris approaches Junior and asks him to give Matt another chance but he refuses.
News hits that the Sheik has bought the track where the Bristol Stakes will take place. Dani loses no time in trying to strike business deals with him. They discuss her ideas at his pre-race party and he seems interested... but is his interest in Dani strictly business? At the same party, Matt and Kris come face to face with Gillian and Junior and it's clear that there is no love lost between the two men. But is there something brewing between Junior and Gillian?
The next day Kris confides in Jean that she feels like she ruins everything she touches. Jean tells her to clear her mind for the race, but she can't. She appeals to Gillian for help but she refuses. Finally, she goes to Junior on race day and pleads with him to forgive and forget, but he just walks away. Kris feels dejected and with the start of the race only a few minutes away. Then, to her surprise, Junior wishes her and Matt good luck, and Matt bets him a cold one that Wildfire will win. Junior tells him he's on, and Kris has to hope... is this the beginning of a fresh start?
The race gets underway and the horses are off. Avatar takes a strong lead. Then it looks like Wildfire is going to pass Avatar until he's bumped by another horse and knocked back to third place. Avatar is the winner, but Kris, Matt and Pablo contest the results. The judge rules that Kris was bumped illegally and is awarded second place behind Avatar. Kris tells the judge that if she hadn't been bumped she would have won, but the judge stands on his decision.
Making good on his bet, Matt treats Junior for a drink at Bobby's. They find that they can commiserate about something: neither Wildfire nor Avatar qualified for a spot in the Derby. (Wildfire missed his chance by one spot, and Avatar by three.) Somehow, by nursing their wounds together, Matt and Junior realize how much they've grown up in the past few years. Maybe, just maybe, there's hope for their friendship, yet.
Back at Raintree, the Sheik approaches Matt and Kris. He tells them that Wildfire should have won the race and offers them a proposition: a secret rematch between Wildfire and Avatar. The purse: one million dollars. The catch: if the racing commission finds out about it, Raintree and Davis Farms could lose their licenses to compete. Kris and Matt are stunned into silence. Are they really considering risking everything for a shot at a million dollars? Is it an offer that's just too good to refuse?
