A lot of changes have happened at Raintree. Matt and Kris are officially a couple. Pablo has gone to work for Davis Farms. But some things remain the same, namely the business of running the ranch. Their prospects seem good, especially with Kris riding Avatar in the upcoming Franklin Memorial race. Avatar's owner and Raintree's biggest client, Tim Sullivan, is excited about the horse's chances of winning and invites Kris to appear with Avatar on a TV sports show in a few days. Until then, he requests that Avatar be put on a special racing feed. Unfortunately, only Pablo knows the recipe so it's up to Matt to come up with a new one.
As Matt and Kris revel in their new relationship, the thing they've both dreaded happens. Junior finds out from Pablo about their relationship and comes to Raintree to confront them. Kris admits that Matt and she are together, and Junior storms off. He's not the only Davis with a broken heart: Dani is still in mourning over R.J., and no matter how hard she tries to get back to business, she can't shake the sadness.
Matt continues to act as head trainer while he and Jean search for Pablo's replacement, but he makes a terrible error: The new feed he gives Avatar causes the horse to break out in hives. Sullivan is livid. Avatar can't appear on TV with welts all over his body, and it's a long shot that he'll be able to win the Franklin Memorial. Matt promises him that Avatar will be ready to race, but Sullivan's doubts about Raintree resurface. He's not the only one, either. Jean also voices her concerns about Matt and Kris's relationship. Can Matt and Kris prove them both wrong?
That night, Junior brings a solemn Dani her favorite pizza and movie to cheer her up, but she decides that it's time for her to be around people. They go to Bobby's and while Junior isn't looking, Dani spots Matt and Kris kissing. She storms over to them and accuses Kris of toying with Junior. Junior walks over just as Matt is trying to calm Dani down and pushes Matt. Matt pushes back and Junior takes a swing. But instead of hitting Matt, he hits Kris. The next day, Matt goes to Davis Farms to talk to Junior. Junior apologizes and Matt tells him that he didn't steal Kris. He also reminds Junior that he accepted it when he and Kris were together, but Junior can't bring himself to do the same. Does this mean the end of their lifelong friendship?
On the day of the race, Kris rides Avatar to victory, winning by a nose over Davis's new horse. Smugly, Ken Davis says Raintree may have won the battle, but Davis will win the war. The Ritters begin to worry that he may be right when Sullivan comes to pick up all his horses to move them to Davis Farms. Kris tries to change Sullivan's mind, but to no avail. He does have a proposition for her, though: He says that if she continues to ride Avatar for Davis Farms, he'll make it worth her while. Will Kris follow in Pablo's footsteps?
Can Raintree survive the loss of their biggest client? Can Matt and Junior ever be friends again? And can Matt and Kris's relationship withstand the challenges it faces, or was it just too good to be true?
