Reginald "Red" Forman
What kind of name is "Kurtwood"? Smith's mom had a crush on a country singer named Kurt, but she added "-wood" because she thought just plain "Kurt" was too short. His career has been just as unusual as his name. For example, he's played three different characters in the "Star Trek" universe over the years, and he's been a guest star on almost every TV show under the sun, from "The A-Team" in the '80s to "The X-Files" in the '90s and "24" in the '00s. But playing Red on "That 70's Show" was his longest-standing and most memorable role to date.
Kurtwood's feature film experience is just as varied as his TV work. He played Clarence Boddicker, the villain in "RoboCop," and he was also in the Oscar-winning films "Dead Poets Society" and "Girl Interrupted." He lives in L.A. with his wife, Joan. Red is a WWII vet and a tough, no-nonsense dad. He seems to like everyone better than he likes his own son, Eric -- including Eric's sister, Laurie, and his best friend, Hyde. Red thinks Eric is weak, wimpy, and not what a young man should be. Unlike Kitty, Red can't stand the gang hanging out at his house, and he's proud of his reputation as the neighborhood's strictest dad. His hobbies include working with power tools, drinking beer, hunting, fishing, and watching Wisconsin sporting events on TV.
