Tom Higgenson, the famous voice of the Plain White T's, is a man who can look on the bright side. Sure, that may seem easy now: He has several hit songs to his credit, is a hugely successful pop star, spends his off time with his beautiful girlfriend, and goes to work every day just steps from the Malibu beach. But it hasn't always been this way.

Take, for example, his most famous song, "Hey There Delilah." The truth is, Tom never had a shot with the real Delilah. "Sad, actually," he laughs about his relationship, or lack thereof, with Delilah DiCrescenzo. "There was never anything between us." So, without a date, he turned his unrequited crush into a No. 1 hit. The songwriter in him knows it's better like this: "If we had lived happily ever after, then what would my next song be about?"

Long before Delilah bruised his heart, Tom suffered serious injuries of another kind. In 1999, he was in a terrible car wreck, breaking several vertebrae and landing in rehab for months. But, again, he turned the ordeal into something positive: He credits the crash and recovery as the turning point of his career. "That was when I started writing songs that meant a little more to me," he says.

He still had years of work, and early band-lineup changes, ahead of him. Yet, Tom Higgenson and his dreams would survive it all, and he'd come out a winner. His skills as a songwriter and performer have been widely praised, but his greatest talent may be for spinning gold out of hardship. And when good things start to happen?
