season one episode 9
Tyler Ford and Wendy have been dating for a few weeks now, and he chooses ... the Batter of the Bulge pancake house for their third date? Well, it's not the best place for dinner, but it does have one of the few remaining copies of Wendy's favorite game, "Gut Wrencher 1" -- proving Tyler knows the way to Dub Dub's heart! But, despite how perfect the pairing seems, Wendy can't help worrying that, with her current job, a relationship isn't possible.
There's not much time to think about relationship trouble, though, because soon a report comes across the police scanner about someone melting and robbing a jewelry store. After some research, it looks as though the Candle -- old nemesis of a previous Middleman -- is back! Suddenly, Ida stops listening to the Middleman and goes straight to a panel on the wall to open a vault. Once the door is open, out walks -- unfrozen all the way from '69 -- The Middleman 1969! (It's none other than special guest star Kevin Sorbo!)
But MM69 is less Austin Powers and more Connery-era Bond. He's rude, sexist, brash, and very charming. And he has his own ideas about how to capture the Candle.
Only, when they DO capture the villain, it's not who they think it is. He's a young kid who happens to have all the Candle's old equipment. The kid claims the Candle died and left him his melting ray to donate to science. But 69's not hearing any of it. He gets rough -- and the current Middleman has to put a stop to it.
When 69 won't calm down, Ida and MM force him to retire. On his way out, we find out MM69's real name is Guy Goddard.
Guy shows up as a civilian at Wendy and Lacey's loft to persuade Dubbie to help him find the real Candle. He has info that an arms dealer just shipped in enough fuel for the Candle's melting ray to destroy a large country.
They sneak into the arms dealer's home, and Wendy plays the strangest card game known to man while Guy snoops through the house for evidence. Eventually, the Middleman arrives to help, but it's too late -- Guy's been accosted by the Candle, and his hand melted off in the scuffle. But the Candle didn't leave them empty-handed; he teased Guy with his plan to melt the moon.
Then Guy, Middleman, and Wendy head to the Candle's lair -- but when they get there, it's all a trap set by Guy Goddard himself. He planned to snuff out the Middleman, frame the long-dead Candle, and take Wendy as his new apprentice.
But Wendy talks him down and shows him the error of his ways, and Guy sacrifices himself to save the one true Middleman.
After the Middlepair sets 69 to rest, MM sets Wendy's relationship worries aside by telling her that if something gets in the way of her romance, it's on her and not the job. So, Wendy continues her Tyler courtship with a new outlook on life and, more important ...
... a new uniform..
