season one episode 7

After a particularly messy case, it's Wendy's job to clean up the Middlemobile. And, for the first time all season, the Middleman takes a rare and well-deserved break. He heads out to catch his favorite old Western, "Ride Lonesome," but finds himself being followed on the way. He doubles back on the stalker, only to find it's Lacey. They flirt and decide to see the movie together. The outing almost turns into a date, but Wendy calls with a red ball from O2STK. Someone's drowned ... in a hotel bed.

At the scene of the crime, MM and Dub Dub run into CSI agent Cecil Rogers. He impresses the pants off the Middleman -- but right after Cecil leaves, the real CSI team arrives. And they've never heard of an Agent Rogers.

Ida finds out that the drowning victim was a man deep into underground sales of stolen artworks and artifacts. A quick search turns up the location of one of the victim's recent associates. MM and Dub Dub speed over there, but when they arrive, the guy's being seduced by a ravenous succubus! The next stop is obvious:

Roxy Wasserman's Famouse Fashion House.

MM and Roxy have words over her breaking their deal: no killing humans. But Roxy wouldn't break a deal for just anything. No, she's out for something really special -- a cursed tuba. And not just any tuba, but a tuba last played on the sinking Titanic. Any person who hears but one note from the tuba will instantly drown in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

While Ida searches for the tuba, Lacey and MM try for a take two on their date, but once again, their timing is horrible. Ida finds the tuba well before the end of act one of "Ride Lonesome." (An act the Middleman has seen 16 times ... and yet, he's never seen the ending.)

Just before our heroes grab the tuba, "Agent" Rogers shows up and steals it. MM and Dub Dub give chase, but Rogers is shot, and the tuba is stolen by yet ANOTHER party! (Confused yet?) While the tuba is rushed away, MM and Dub Dub watch in shock as Rogers heals before their eyes.

At MM HQ, Cecil admits that he was the tuba player on the Titanic. When he fled like a coward -- taking a lifeboat spot from a boy with polio and his blind mother -- his tuba was cursed for all eternity. Now, as long as the tuba is intact, he can't die.

Cecil explains that the tuba was taken by philanthropist and Titanic fetishist Arthur Mendelson, a billionaire who's hosting a gala for Titanic buffs on his larger-than-the-Titanic ship. The centerpiece of the bash is a song played on the very tuba last played on the sinking Titanic.

MM and Wendy dress up to go to the gala, but Lacey and Noser show up, throwing a wrench in their plans. Wendy lets Lacey know about the party, and, unfortunately for Wendy, Lacey's mom has pull with Mendelson. Wendy tries to lose her friends but ends up doing more harm than good.

Then, while they're looking for the tuba on the boat, MM and Dub Dub are captured and tied up below deck. They have no choice but to text Lacey and Noser for help. The pair shows up and unties team Middleman, but the civilians are seriously suspicious of our heroes' cover stories.

MM and Wendy rush to stop Cecil, knocking him and his tuba overboard -- dooming both to either destruction or drowning for eternity. Sadly, MM feels that courting Lacey put her in danger, so he tells a fib. He explains that his work has rules against dating co-workers' roommates, so he can't see her.

Before he walks away from Lacey, she stops him. She pulls him back to her and tells him the ending of "Ride Lonesome." She says that, even though it doesn't happen the way you expect, the outcome was unavoidable. And as they look into each other's eyes and dance sadly to the string quartet, you can't help wondering if -- despite the obstacles -- Lacey and MM's outcome will be unavoidable as well.
