season one episode 4

Just when Wendy thought she was getting control of her job and her life, Lacey drops a bomb on her: Wendy's ex, Ben, posted their break-up video on the Internet. And the worst part? He's getting famous off it.

So when people with horrendous facelifts start disappearing, only to reappear later minus their heads, Wendy's happy for the distraction. Avoiding Lacey's pop psychology (inspired by TV host Dr. Gil), as well as the Middleman's psych evaluations and Ida's snide comments, Wendy pursues the new investigation with almost too much vigor. When they discover that all of the victims went to a plastic surgeon named Dr.Newleaf, Wendy's ready to sentence the doctor on the spot.

But the plastic surgeon isn't actually a doctor at all. He's a member of an alien race known as Manicoids. They're exiles on Earth who hide out in the richest parts of towns because their odd facial structure blends in best with the most body-dysmorphic humans (translation: They look less like freaks when they're surrounded by plastic surgery patrons).

Before leaving the clinic, the Middleman gives Dr. Newleaf a gift -- a Middlewatch, complete with hidden tracking device. When the Manicoid is teleported away, MM and Dub Dub track the watch to a television station. Our heroes break in to find the Middlewatch ... but no Dr. Newleaf!

Enter popular TV show personality Dr. Gil. We learn that when Gil was younger, he and his father shot down a Manicoid ship, and a piece of debris from the crashing craft dealt dad a death blow. The grief-stricken doc salvaged a teleportation device from the Manicoid vessel, then spent years becoming a famous therapist so he could raise the money to realize his revenge on the Manicoids.

In the scuffle that follows, Wendy chases Dr. Gil through the teleporter as the controls are destroyed by a stray blast from the Middleman. MM tries to get it up and running again, but to no avail.

In a far-away desert, Wendy and a frightened Dr. Newleaf are running for cover. Dr. Gil uses the area as his own private hunting range, and he isn't far behind with his rifle.

Wendy dodges a bunch of bullets, but then she gets fed up. She climbs down from her hiding place to face the hunter -- and to get the day's heavy load of emotions off her chest. Even though Dr. Gil plans to kill Wendy, he still considers himself a therapist. So when she unloads on him about all the people in her life who've left her (Ben, her Dad), Dr. Gil stops shooting and listens -- just long enough for the Middleman, now tooling around in a Manicoid space ship, to find them and vaporize the villainous hunter-shrink.

In the end, Wendy goes home and finishes her emotional purge. She cuts up Ben's old sweater and uses it to texturize the Manicoid's face in her latest painting. And she feels a whole let better after that.
