season one episode 2

After a long day of fighting evil, the last thing Wendy Watson wants is to wake up at 3am to bail her roommate out of jail. And even though Wendy does want to do the best friend thing by supporting Lacey and her causes, the morning crankies get the better of her, which prompts her to deliver a mom-like lecture. Which is not appreciated.

Now that she's on the outs with Lacey, Wendy has to fight evil while distracted by personal issues. So, when a magical earth elemental in the form of a Chinese Terracotta Warrior shows up to kidnap the heir to the Qin Dynasty and doom the human race to a thousand years of raining fire, the Middleman can't help but worry about Wendy's mental state.

While he lectures her on keeping focus, Wendy notices that the Middleman is himself more antsy than usual. He explains that even though he knows almost everything about aliens and is an accomplished martial artist, his one weakness is magic — the supernatural.

So they hire a consultant: recovered succubus and famous fashionista Roxy Wasserman. She agrees to prepare the one thing that can destroy an earth elemental (a vial of aquatic banishment) if they can stall him from whisking the Qin heir away to the Underworld.

Wendy goes home to prepare for a trip to China but is waylaid by Lacey. Wendy tries to apologize, but when she lets it slip that she's working for Roxy Wasserman, Lacey gets even angrier. Roxy is single-handedly keeping fur in style, and Lacey is determined to do something about it.

Lacey visits Roxy to protest, but after impressing the succubus with fashion knowledge, Lacey lands a job instead. She intends to use the opportunity to find the fur room and toss around some fake blood, but she becomes too busy running errands — including fetching Tahiti water for the Middleman's vial of aquatic banishment.

Meanwhile, the Middleman and Wendy discover, with the help of Ida the robotic assistant, that the heir to the Qin Dynasty is not in China; he's a local boy named Duncan, and he's not the least bit Asian. They find him at his school, just as the Terracotta Warrior is about to strike, and they spirit the boy off in the Middlemobile.

Back at Duncan's home, a very snappily dressed Lacey waits with a brown paper bag containing the vial of aquatic banishment. The Middleman thanks her for his "skin treatment" and sends her back to Roxy.

Soon enough, the Terracotta Warrior shows up again, but the Middleman isn't worried, because he has the ultimate weapon against earth elementals — or so he thinks. But Lacey has issues with bottled water's carbon footprint, so she and neighbor Noser have filled the bottles with tap water, which may be green but is useless from a magic perspective. The Middleman and Wendy are knocked out, and the elemental kidnaps Duncan. Dagnabbit!

Not to worry — armed with a new vial and Roxy's help, the Middleman and Wendy race the elemental to the Underworld. In a final battle, they destroy the warrior, protect Duncan, and save the planet. Whew!

Once the world is out of peril, Wendy finally has time to talk with Lacey about their blow-up. They both apologize — Wendy for being such a mom and Lacey for not realizing Wendy was just looking out for her. To show off her new maturity, Lacey channels her protests; rather than throwing fake blood on the furs, she convinces Roxy to donate them to the homeless.
