Here's your guide to what happens when Wendy accidentally travels to an alternate universe, one where everyone has goatees, in "The Middleman" episode 12, "The Palindrome Reversal Palindrome"!

season one episode 12

Wendy and Tyler can't catch a break! Every time they plan a date, their bosses call. Tyler gets whisked away in Manservant Neville's helicopter, and Wendy goes with the Middleman to investigate a new villain calling himself "The Palindrome."

They find the Palindrome just as he's starting up his Quantum Singularity Machine — a device that can create a mini black hole! MM tries to get the Palindrome monologuing while Wendy sneaks up on him from behind, but the villain is oddly silent. Instead of having the decency to give our heroes time to dispatch him before his plan is unfurled, he turns on his machine and is sucked into a black hole, along with lots of debris — and Wendy.

Dub Dub finds herself on the ground without the Middleman. But she does see the Palindrome. She gives chase but, when she rounds a corner, she stops in her tracks. The world has changed. The military is everywhere, the sky is smoggy, people stand in line for aerosolized soup -- the Middleverse has gone post-apocalyptic.

Welcome to the United States of FATBOY, baby.

Not sure what to do, Wendy sidesteps storm troopers and giant televisions spreading Manservant Neville's word of hate and heads home.

But home's changed too. Noser still guards her hallway, but this time he REALLY guards it. He pulls out a shotgun and demands to know "WHO'S THE MAN!?" before Wendy can pass. And then, she finds her loft is now an exotic dance club that serves Lacey's famous rabbit stew. Wendy begs Lacey for help, but in this world Wendy betrayed her friend long ago. Lacey won't be any help.

Back in the normal universe, the Middleman watches the events unfold again and again on the Real Time Situation Recording Archive. The Palindrome, with a beard and black suit, goes into the Singularity and then comes back out in a light suit with no beard. MM must find this new Palindrome to save Wendy.

In the evil Middleverse, Wendy goes to the only other place she can think of -- Middleman HQ. There she finds Ida looking like a swimsuit model, and a bearded, mulleted, eyepatch-wearing Middleman working on "the Middlehog."

He refuses to help her without payment. This alternate Middleman is a real piece of work. She hands over her valuables, and they get to finding the Palindrome.

Simultaneously, both the good MM and the evil one find the Palindrome, a man known as Ivan Avi. They pick him up and interrogate him. When the two Avis were young, they had an accident that severed their pineal glands, allowing them to have a psychic connection to each other. Both felt born into the wrong world, so they decided to switch. Wendy was never supposed to be involved. Good Palindrome offers to help. He tells the Middleman that if both Middlemen stand in the same place, at the same time, and fire a phased polaron cannon at the exact same point in the sky, Wendy could make it home. Luckily, our Middleman has a phased polaron cannon and figures his counterpart should have one too.

Good Palindrome sends his brother the message, who relays it to Wendy and evil Middleman. But, during an escape attempt, evil Palindrome is killed -- severing the connection between Wendy and our good Middleman.

Since she got the message, it shouldn't be a problem. Except, evil Middleman sold his phased polaron cannon to FATBOY to pay the bills. Wendy decides to infiltrate FATBOY, but evil Middleman refuses.

Ida tells Wendy that evil Middleman wasn't always so uncaring. He used to be a good Middleman — a REAL Middleman. That is, until "he" died. Ida shows Wendy the last hurrah of the Middleboy. Wendy's jaw drops. Though he has a goatee, she clearly recognizes Tyler being killed by a red anodized ray gun.

With no Middleman, Wendy returns to Lacey for help. It takes some convincing, but the two roommates finally team up and hit FATBOY COMMAND. Inside, they do find the phased polaron cannon ... but they also find Manservant Neville's cryogenically frozen body. Thats when the Tyler-killing red anodized ray gun appears from off screen. And it's in the hand of the true villain -- evil Wendy Watson!

Wendy battles Wendy for the phased polaron cannon, but our Wendy was trained by Sensei Ping! With last-minute unexpected help from evil Middleman, the girls escape and head off to send Wendy home.

The cannons fire, and Wendy tells the evil versions of her friends goodbye. After she leaves, evil Middleman offers Lacey a job as Middlegirl, leaving some hope for their foul world after all.

The episode ends as the pilot did -- Wendy's talking to her mom and painting. Only, this time she's painting the Middleman.

All is right in Wendy Watson's world.
