season one episode 1
Wendy Watson is a struggling artist who's resigned herself to a life of redundant temp jobs -- until a freak accident involving an angry genetic experiment introduces her to the world's most absurdly covert operative: the Middleman.
Impressed by Wendy's calm in the face of danger, the heroic yet nameless Middleman offers her a job as his sidekick in the fight against bizarre evil and strange crime. Wendy, who's out of work and was recently dumped by her loser boyfriend, accepts with a jaded "Why not?"
Her first case is an odd one. Mobsters are being executed all over town, and there's just one clue: a banana peel left at the scene of each crime. The Middleman's cranky android assistant, Ida, detects genetically enhanced simian DNA on the peels, so the newly augmented team Middleman (uh, that would be Wendy and the Middleman) heads off to the one place in town with genetically enhanced simians.
Dr. Gibbs, head researcher at Simionics Labs, shows them her creations. Using electronic voice boxes hung around their necks, the gorillas recite poetry, while others use their higher brain function to paint. Every cage is filled with apes making art -- except Spanky's. His cage is empty, and further investigation reveals a secret passageway leading to a room filled with gangster movie memorabilia. This leads our heroes to the only possible conclusion: The mastermind behind the mob boss killings is actually a hyper-intelligent, genetically enhanced super-gorilla with a "Scarface" obsession.
The Middleman and Wendy track down Spanky, but they lose him in mid-chase when he discards his voice box to blend in at a zoo.
After a long day of searching gorilla pens with nothing to show for it, Wendy heads home to the illegal sublet she shares with Lacey, another photogenic young artist. But when Wendy arrives, she finds a banana peel in front of her door. She does the smart thing -- she calls the Middleman.
Once they've detained the hairy fiend, our heroes see that Spanky's wearing a brand new voice box. This can mean only one thing -- Dr. Gibbs is the true mastermind!
Team Middleman breaks into the labs, destroys the supercomputer controlling the hyper-intelligent apes, and foils Gibbs's plan to take over the world with an army of super-gorillas.
The case solved and her first day over, Wendy finally goes home to relax -- and create a little art inspired by her new not-so-redundant life.
