In one of the greatest romantic movies ever, a man reads to a woman in a nursing home, and a story unfolds ... . It's the 1940s, and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling, "Lars and the Real Girl") and Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams, "Mean Girls") are from different worlds. He's a country boy, and she's from the city -- but when they meet, it's love at first sight. They share a magical summer, until fate conspires against them. Noah is called off to war, and Allie's mother (Joan Allen, "The Bourne Ultimatum") does whatever it takes to keep them apart. Allie waits for Noah, but she never hears from him again. Years pass, and she meets a handsome soldier (James Marsden, "27 Dresses") who asks her to marry him. As her wedding day nears, something happens that turns her world upside down. She finds Noah and discovers the reason she never heard from him. Now Allie must choose between the man she's meant to marry and the man she's meant to be with. (2004)
