In the final race of the prestigious Piston Cup, a hotshot rookie named Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is up against two-time winner The King (Richard Petty) and Chick Hicks (Michael Keaton), another racing veteran who'll do anything to win.

Lightning's got the speed, but his attitude could use a realignment: He takes crazy chances and insists on driving solo without a pit crew. In the end, the Piston Cup is too close to call, so the officials announce a rematch in California.

But a funny thing happens on the way out west. Lightning is separated from his transport outside a small town called Radiator Flats, and a run-in with the law lands him in the impound yard. Thanks to a pretty lawyer named Sally (Bonnie Hunt) and a judge named Doc (Paul Newman, in his final film role), Lightning gets a chance to redeem himself. But does he have what it takes to be a champion?

Race day arrives, and Lightning's revved up to prove himself. The engines roar. The crowd goes wild. And a few surprises help Lightning learn what it really means to be a winner.
